This month every person who plays video games has one soap opera question on their mind, and it is what the heck happened with Palworld and Pokemon’s Nintendo? Nintendo has beautiful art and games it has made, and it sued another company for making a game called Palworld like their games. Can they do this? There is a phrase that fits the issue at hand, and that is the legal phrase “fair use” in art. The famous author Immanuel Kant once famously said. “The dilemma of postmodernism is that all art is collage.” This means all art has a bit of other art in it, and we are all standing tall on the shoulders of giants. How much can one work of art look like another before it is just basic copying? Fair use is defined as the following idea. “Reasonable and limited use of copyrighted material so as not to infringe upon copyright.” (Dictionary.com, 2026). I find this interesting because when I first posted a few of my favorite pictures and drawings online in blogs, internet trolls said “that is not yours” if it looked anything like another drawing. If you make it with different paint and changes to it YES, it is your own work even if it is styled like another drawing. Art has stylized techniques used frequently, and very untalented people like to put artists down saying their art is basic copies. This month Palworld won the lawsuit against Nintendo, and video game fans rejoice at being free to play the version they like best.
