Proper Place
It happened again last night; someone called me gay and tried to drag me to a gay club. I am not gay! I was bisexual years ago, and I am female and I did date a few girls. A few guys then tried to stalk me like some sort of Cape Fear movie saying I needed to meet a “real” man, and I was quick to say I would never get with them at all due to disliking their gender. This gossip was then spread far and wide. I would never date them anyway due to their thick skulls not understanding “no” as an idea. Then I went back to dating men years ago. Some people never have to debate their personal dating identity so life is easy for them, but for many gender is a more fluid concept. The problem is people have come up to me, and said that they were doing me the “favor” of dragging me to gay clubs when I am talking to single men. I have two degrees, and I am not so stupid that I don’t know I am talking to single guys. This happened to me this weekend. Even if I was full-blown gay my entire social life would not happen “only” in gay clubs. Insisting you know people’s “proper” social life because of past dates, or supporting gay rights is really offensive. I have noticed a strange increase in the amount of times I have to explain this to people this year. This has been the third time in three months. It is rather frightening in a Handmaiden’s Tale sort of a way that this is even a debate.

TV Trivia
Black Camera and Ruby Stone trivia note on why a “black camera” and a “ruby stone” were used in this story I started in 2014. There are two popular TV show Twilight Zone episodes where people see the future, get great wealth, and almost destroy people they love with the power to see the future for money. The episodes end with the protagonists vowing that money and power are not worth destroying love. In one called “The Nick of Time” a young William Shatner confronts a table top devil with diamond and ruby gem-like eyes, sees the future, and runs from it. This is the origin of the ruby. There is also a Twilight Zone called “A Most Unusual Camera” where a guy gets a magic black camera, and the photos all come true five minutes later. You take the camera to gamble, photograph horse races, and win every time. Oh no the power ends up killing someone the owner loves! This is a wink and a nod to “trading money for love” being a common short story plot line since black and white TV days. It is a central theme in my stories.P.S. I am already packing my travel toothbrush for my trip to the south at the end of October. To say I am excited would be an understatement.

The Call
I post on Facebook I will be visiting the south and Texas. About 50 now single ex-boyfriends ask me out, and one hundred old school friends offer to buy me dinner. I try to have a party in Virginia, and crickets sing next to my phone as way fewer people call. I am trying not to be a negative Nelly! However it is a prime example of the fact that it is not me, and the social world just in fact sucks in Virginia. I am so visiting the south more this year. This is my birthday week, and the social void hurts most this time of year.
