    Reading Delay

    By Andrea Menzies

This week’s podcast may be delayed as I am registering for night school to get certifications I need for more work hours in teaching jobs. My book recommendations may go from fun weekend fiction to University textbook commentary this month. Entertainment reading will take a backseat to night school class reading as I start new online classes. I have been working for years to get into the program so it should be interesting. In addition I needed many shots for COVID at Walgreens. I always reacted badly to shots in the past. After this hassle my posts will be on schedule once more.

Episode 10 Season 6 – The Color Of Magic

This week the FH7 book club looks at “The Color Of Magic” by author Terry Pratchett. British comedy like “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams is similar to Terry Pratchett’s “The Color Of Magic” story in that it pokes fun at popular fiction stories as it also IS one. It ridicules medieval times even as it has a medieval style setting filled with magic and adventure. I am a teacher, and do book report grading and assistance, and also play films based on popular youth books.

“The Color Of Magic” by Terry Pratchett is a New York Times best seller. In addition it is part of the “Disk World” series that won the Carnegie Medal, Locus Awards, and the ALA Best Books for Young Adults award. It also the Prometheus Award, and the British Fantasy Award. So the book transcends youth fiction, and is also a popular series to adult readers. It has been made into a movie streaming for free on Amazon Prime.

In this first book Rincewind and Twoflower are travelers working to save the world as mystery lights fill the sky. As the world starts to end they franticly try to save it, and yet the luggage turns out to be alive and killing more than the monsters they have to battle. On page 203 it says:

“The Luggage had and elemental nature, absolutely no brain, and a homicidal attitude toward anything that threatened its master.” This is a plot point that goes on for many books.

I give the book five out of five stars, and a good review. If you are having a bad day this book is sure to make you feel better. I got into reading Terry Pratchett in New Orleans when a friend named Damien gave me a copy of “Good Omens”, and it helped me not feel stressed at a stressful time. For the rest of the full review go to the blog at FH7publishing.com or frozenhistory7publishing.wordpress.com Thanks for listening, and tune in again next week for more book reviews.

P.S. Yes I have heard the bad rumors about the author N. Gaiman that co-wrote many stories with Pratchett. Please note that being a person’s co-worker in no way makes you responsible for their personal life.

It is horrible stuff, but up for a jury to decide what guilt is. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn01dynqx7ro

    Media Break

    By Andrea Menzies

I was taking a social media break, but the Trump swear-in was too scary. The social media owners section photographs showed me we must desperately support what few uncensored posts we can get. I am now officially switching to Tumblr and Blue Sky for most of my postings.

Many thanks to my new podcast followers on YouTube this week. Love of good books is the last thing you can talk about on the Internet these days without friend and follower loss.

    Rights Books

I may be obsessed with reading animal rights books because I will miss having a president agreeing with the cause in the White House. Wild biting shelter dogs never bit him. It is very scary how many social media owners were at the new president’s swear in. As more people are getting news from social media it screams of book burning level censorship. I am going to use Blue Sky and Tumblr more as they at least try to support women’s health care.

Woot I got the 30 day streak badge on the Sunny Heath and Fitness app. You can use their equipment for extra points, or use it for free with other equipment you own already. It is thousands cheaper than Peleton. My mom and daughter ate dinner with me around Christmas time, and they made what seemed like one million cakes and pies. I am trying not to let the calories do what they want to do on my thighs. In addition this is my last post on social media for a while. The other day one of my students quoted a social media post I made back to me from weeks ago. I never try to add students to my accounts, and it is against school policy. A few of my student friends from High School and University are all I want to see viewing my posts. Unfortunately students have older friends, older family members, and make fake accounts for Internet stalking. Your life is pretty pathetic if stalking a single mom teacher online is the one way you can feel excitement in your life. So I am taking a break from social media on the Internet, as it seems nice educated student people never communicate with me on social media anymore and trolls, scammers, and haters have become the entire population of the Internet. I blame Internet phones greatly because when a $2000 desktop PC was the one way to go online nice and fun student people were 99% of the Internet. I couldn’t wait to open my e-mails to see all the party and concert invitations near campus that were not fake scams. Once prepaid Internet phones started to be sold next to pawn shops in strip malls the Internet was almost all trolls, con-artists, and porn spam overnight. Fitness apps are the only good thing left online, and my latest New Year’s Resolution is to only post family or fitness app related content if I ever post again. People who are depressed cannot get out of bed much less do many workouts, and I am showing off my positive view on life.

Many thanks to my friends from New Orleans that sent me information about their safety this week. It is nice to know we still stay in contact over the years and are still friends. I used to live less than ten miles from the Quarter in an apartment by myself for years. It is strange New Orleans had ramming safety barriers, but skipped using them that night. Every concert I go to lately has guards, bag checks, and pat-downs. Some will not even allow normal sized purses. I thought they were paranoid, but that is the right amount of carefully watching customers in dark times.
