  • New Orleans Visit Canceled

My plans to visit New Orleans for Halloween got destroyed this week. Not only is the Delta variant still destroying plans, but hurricane Ida that hit New Orleans this year is still destroying plans. I made a hotel reservation to visit New Orleans for their giant events for Halloween 2021. Halloween is usually a huge boost to New Orleans tourism due to many parades next to above ground cemeteries in a town with a reputation as a “haunted” looking vintage city. Jazz Festivals, rare concerts, book signings, and fiction conventions all plan October dates in New Orleans. Plus I went to school there for years so I enjoy saying hi to school friends when people are out and about for events. People fly in from all over the world to see a New Orleans Halloween. Unfortunately then the hotel I booked at refunded my money as I had NOT asked to cancel the reservation!

It turns out “first responders” as they call themselves are still living in all the hotels MONTHS after the storm, and have restored very little as town residents are still living in tents months later. They are paying a fraction of what visitors normally pay for the Jazz Festival and Halloween hotels, and destroying the October tourist trade. (The hotel mentioned to me in an angry phone message as they were forced to cancel my reservation without asking.) In addition New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival canceled the October event a few weeks ago (as cited in this article here https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/02/travel/new-orleans-ida-tourism.html), citing concerns about an increase in coronavirus cases so it seems the government is trying to destroy New Orleans under the disguise of “emergency help” to the town. Oh well I just console myself by knowing it can’t be closed forever, and there will be other years. Being stuck in Virginia is a super-crapy substitute for a real New Orleans visit for Halloween, but I will try to make the best of it.

  • Funny Jokes

The Internet was full of funny jokes about Facebook and Instagram being down. The one I loved most was the Twitter post about the last Facebook post someone saw being Neil Gaiman posing with the key to Hell. Neil liked the post. The next was Instagram saying we are all suddenly in Little House on the Prairie due to having a few moments without a tiny part of the Internet. These people would never have survived the 80s.

  • Logic Jokes

As a person who lived in New Orleans for years for school I find the storm jokes extra funny this year.

  • Dropped Off

I dropped off Alexandria at school today. She was very happy to be back in Fredericksburg and back in classes.

  • Brother James

My brother James Menzies has flown in to live in Virginia. His photo is below with Anne on the left and Alexandria on the right. We are taking him out to dinner tonight. He is a retired Army veteran which served in many tours of duty in the Middle East. Boy does he have interesting ideas to say about the American pull out from Afghanistan this week.

Brother of Andrea Menzies named James Menzies visiting this weekend.
  • 2021 No Delta

What I am NOT letting the Delta Variant do this year.

  • Austin and Covid

    Oh no Austin is sick!

  • Hate Virginia

I hate so much the nightmare of Virginia! I am often baffled at how much the music, dating, and friendship people disappoint me in comparison to Austin, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana. Both are downtown areas I have had apartments in before living here. I lived by myself, and had no roommates. Then my mother literally kidnapped my daughter out of school illegally in Texas, and forced me to move to Virginia out of the blue with threats to my daughter. I beg Anne daily to move back home away from Virginia, and she never listens to me. My daughter proved she never loved me when she picked a Virginia school to graduate from with a degree. We could have had a shot at getting out of this horrible place, but unfortunately she has never lived in a better town in her adult life so she does not know what she is missing. Visits back to New Orleans and Austin are the only thing that keeps me hanging on to a sense of joy.

  • Elsa Storm

The Elsa storm is kicking my area’s butt today. A storm queen indeed.
